Alum and ferric chloride are used as coagulants in municipal drinking water plants. Alum is the dominant water treatment coagulant used in USALCO’s shipping area.
Benefits of Alum over Ferric Chloride
Alum has the following benefits over ferric chloride:
- Produces less sludge
- Less corrosive
- More Consistent. Ferric chloride is produced from a by product of steel production has many impurities including mercury
