Sodium aluminate and aluminum sulfate are used to produce the alumina substrate for hydro treating catalysts and to make the alumina binder for FCC catalysts.  Sodium aluminate is also used with sodium silicate to produce the zeolites used in FCC catalysts. 

Sodium aluminate and alum are also used in producing alumina automotive washcoat catalysts.
